During and between meetings, I split my energy between blaming, berating and bemoaning my fellow Toastmaster. Identify specific behaviors that trigger your emotions. Remember, each of us responds to the world uniquely. Every time we react to another person strongly—positively or negatively—it says as much about us as it does about the person.
Accept responsibility for your feelings and thoughts. What drives you to distraction may actually be enjoyed by another member. Talk privately to the individual. Once you have identified specific behaviors that you find annoying, share them as you would a helpful evaluation, sandwiched between positives. Everyone has at least a few positive attributes! Can your club completely stop a leak?
But it can be slowed down to a trickle. What are those deposits? They are seven simple strategies that can help keep members engaged, satisfied and excited about their Toastmasters journey.
Define Their Needs. Many joined Toastmasters to become better speakers but found terrific leadership training. Some joined expecting fast improvement but experienced slower progress than they anticipated. Speaking, networking, learning, horizon-broadening, safe place to fail? Yes—Toastmasters has that! My meeting attendance sometimes felt obligatory or futile, even as an officer for nine years.
Now I do more professional speaking and training than I did when I joined. I value my own growth, but I also value mentoring others to help them find their own voices. Elevate the Fun Factor. Psychology confirms that when people have fun, the brain releases feel-good chemicals such as oxytocin and dopamine, leading to feelings of bonding and safety with other people.
Members who have fun will be more productive, more creative, more accepting of others, more likely to stay in Toastmasters and more committed to reaching their own personal goals.
Most likely, you felt a warmer connection to them, and those positive emotions helped cultivate a stronger community. Try themed meetings, club parties, or special events outside the regular club environment. Insert levity and humor into your meetings. Institute some wacky traditions, or do something unexpected or unusual.
Disgraceful District Politics. Not enough time. Lack of connection. Cheesy, Boring, Lacking. Exciting job promotion. Expanded life opportunities. Too much work. Veni, vidi, vici. No longer matters. No friends here. Forgot to laugh. Growing feels weird. Lack of Payback. Too early. Unaligned expectations. Not for them. Unjustified Dues increase. Because it's time.
