Light guns hit home video game consoles with Shooting Gallery on the Magnavox Odyssey in Because the included shotgun-style light gun was only usable on a Magnavox television, the game flopped. While older light guns like the Ray-O-Lite rifle emitted beams of light, the Zapper and many other recent light guns work by receiving light through a photodiode on or in the barrel and using that light to figure out where on the TV screen you're aiming.

In the A game of Duck Hunt, the dog searches for ducks, and when one is found, he will jump into the bushes to flush it out, allowing players to shoot at it with the included NES Zapper. The ducks appear one or two at a time, and the player is given three shots to shoot them down. The player receives points upon shooting each duck. The gun itself is also not particularly complex.

It uses a lens that creates a very narrow focus for the light sensor located at the end of the barrel. When you pull the trigger, that light sensor checks to see if there is white light blasting in its direction. Coming back to Duck Hunt, the light gun used in the game consists of a trigger and a light sensor a photodiode. When there are two ducks on the screen, three frames are used. The game will show a black screen, then a black screen with one of the ducks turned into a white square, and then a third frame with the other target illuminated.

That's it. Such a simple device. It's really a shame they've never improved on video games since then. This was the perfect game. Basically everything has been downhill from this cartridge. It will not work on LCDs, plasma displays or other flat panel displays due to display lag. Older light guns did not use this method, making it possible to cheat and get a perfect hit score in a way not possible using the NES Zapper.
